Please Note: This is a live course held at the Bastyr Kenmore Campus. 

Prerequisites
This seminar requires at least a one year of college-level Spanish and students should be comfortable with intermediate to advanced knowledge of Spanish, including conjugating verbs, conversational vocabulary, and grammar.

Experience with basic Spanish conversation skills (preferably without reading from a textbook) is required

Completion of an online Spanish for Medical Professionals course would also fulfill the prerequisite requirements. Please email us at continuinged@bastyr.edu if you have any questions about this requirement.

Course Description

Elevate your Spanish proficiency in a dynamic mock-clinical setting with our Spanish for Healthcare Practitioners course. Tailored for students with a solid foundation in Spanish, this course propels your language skills forward by integrating medical vocabulary and real-life dialogues. Led by experienced instructor Urania Pérez, MS, this intensive 4-hour seminar emphasizes interactive role-play scenarios, enabling you to confidently engage with Hispanic patients in healthcare contexts. 

Course Objectives

  •          Master Medical Spanish Phrases: Acquire and apply specialized medical phrases and dialogues to enhance your communication skills in a clinical setting.
  •          Facilitate Effective Patient Interaction: Develop the ability to appropriately greet Hispanic patients, conduct basic interviews, and perform physical exams with cultural sensitivity.
  •      Develop Prescription and Instruction Skills: Learn and practice the language of prescribing medications, providing instructions, and fostering clear communication regarding healthcare treatments.

CEU Credits: (4 CEU's for the following professions)

  • ND (licensed in WA)
  • MD & PA - Category II CMEs (those licensed in WA)
  • ARNP & RN - Category II (licensed in WA)

Textbook Requirements

On-Campus Expectations

  • Please Bring: Your required textbook. Wear comfortable clothing to allow for movement. Personal water bottle (filtered water dispensers available on campus to refill).

  • Meals: You will have one 30-minute lunch break – The Dining Commons is not open on the weekends. Please be prepared to bring your own meals.

  • Location: Bastyr University Kenmore Campus. Bastyr University is housed in an older facility with fluctuating interior temperatures; it is advisable to wear layers. Also, Bastyr is a “fragrance-free” campus.

About the Instructor

Urania Pérez MS, is an Educator, a certified K-12 teacher with a Master degree In Geography. She founded Spanish In Seattle in 2007. She teaches Medical Spanish to Rehabilitation Medicine students at University of Washington as an independent instructor. She has taught Medical Spanish for Nurses as an independent instructor for Seattle University’s nursing program and Medical Spanish for Healthcare Providers at the former Experimental College. Urania has about 20 years of teaching experience. She is passionate about this class as it incorporates, in addition to Spanish medical terminology and phrasing, cultural competency so that health providers can enhance their ability to reach and communicate with their Hispanic patients.
